Facebook Inc. is creating 200 jobs in Austin, thanks to a $1.4 million incentive from the state of Texas.
This is exciting news for Facebook and Austin. I would love to see this type of thing happening in Eugene, or even Corvallis. Unfortunately, I think that type of opportunity is a long way off. But it’s exactly the type of job growth that the city and county need to increase the quality of life of the community.
Eugene and Lane county need to invest in the type of infrastructure that would support these types of commitments. There needs to be more emphasis put towards fostering and nurturing the types of small companies which build talent pools from which a growing player like Facebook can feed.
I think there’s a lot of work (and opportunity) the University’s computer science and business programs can do to produce candidates and companies that are stable enough to harbor a labor pool that supports the community and attracts larger employers.
